How to File Your Homestead Exemption
Lower your annual property taxes on your new home. Free, simple, and filed directly with your county.
Instructions and Checklists
-
A homestead exemption removes part of your home's value from taxation, lowering your annual property tax bill. It only applies to your primary residence.
-
Filing is 100% free through your county. If you receive letters in the mail offering to file this for a fee, throw them away. Those are private commercial solicitations.
-
You do not have to wait until January 1. Most counties allow you to file your homestead exemption immediately once your driver's license address matches your new home. If county tax records do not show your name yet, attach a copy of your closing disclosure or recorded deed to your application.
-
In TX, state law requires the address on your driver's license to match your new property address before you submit Form 50-114. Update your license online with the DPS first.
